Regus did it. Servcorp did it. So wouldn’t you expect Phone.com to do it? Do what, you ask? Launch a mobile phone app.
Actually, Phone.com was the first to launch a mobile app. Earlier this year, Phone.com released its Mobile Office for Android and Mobile VOIP for iPhone applications. Now, the company has turned its attention to Research in Motion’s BlackBerry—shooting straight at the heart of the business user market. This beats out Regus and Servcorp, which are still working to drive adoption of the iPhone app.
Dubbed the Phone.com Mobile Office for BlackBerry application, the app lets subscribers make and receive calls and text messages, and perform a variety of other tasks from their Phone.com number using their BlackBerry phone.
Why is Phone.com investing in a mobile app for BlackBerry? Market research offers the answer.
“As a recent Forrester survey showed, 49 percent of small business owners currently use a Blackberry device which makes the launch of our Mobile Office for BlackBerry app that much more important,” says Ari Rabban, CEO of Phone.com. “The comprehensive capabilities of this app were only available to executives at large corporations but now we are happy to bring them to businesses of any size.”
So what exactly can you do with the app beyond receiving phone calls and texts from your Phone.com phone number? Plenty. You can access and manage your Phone.com account voicemail, view received faxes, click and connect to their private conference call bridge, review call history, block calls from unwanted or unidentified numbers, send and receive SMS messages.
Sounds good in theory, doesn’t it? But what about in practice? Phone.com had one of its customers on hand who’s personally tested the mobile app to offer some insights from a user perspective.
“As the president of a small Web design firm, I am often on the road and away from the office so it’s important to me that my business line is always accessible for inbound and outbound calls,” says Jonathan Jones, President and CEO, Jones Web Designs.
“The Phone.com Virtual Office for Blackberry application makes it easier to return missed phone calls, start conference calls and make calls directly from my Blackberry using my business number. We were already seeing improved flexibility of communication and increased efficiency by adding the Phone.com Virtual Office system, but adding the Blackberry application doubled that.”
